• A Berry Picking Day

Spring break is wrapping up.  This school counselor returns to school tomorrow.  I’m certain I’ll daydream about growing strawberries as the week comes on. Last week, some dear friends and I drove over to Jollisant Farms in Plantersville, Texas.  Jollisant Farm offers assorted berries for picking but currently, strawberries are in season. Equipped with a box and instructions, we were sent into the rows. I could feel the anticipation rise as we neared the patch.  The pickers, especially the littles, were filled with excitement and urgency. I wonder if that excitement was more than a sense of anticipation. I wonder if it is a manifestation of God creating us to…

  • Community Supported Agriculture

Sundays include church, sometimes lunch with friends, and then heading out to a local farm to pick up the weeks community supported agriculture (CSA) basket.  I know some of you are thinking, “Is that like Hello Fresh or a fruit of the month kind of thing?”  I would say in some ways yes, but all together different and way better.  What is Community Supported Agriculture?   Community Supported Agriculture (CSA), also known as Crop Share, is a program that allows a farm to provide in-season produce  to a set number of consumers, “subscribers”, every week in a growing season.  Most CSA farms focus on vegetables but there are some that…

  • Life is better with Chickens

Recently, I made arrangements to see a woman about some birds.  I met Angie soon after moving to College Station and have enjoyed running into her and the cute littles around town over the last year and a half.  Angie and her family were happy to share their agriculture experience. Upon arrival, I was met by Angie and Grayson, clad in his muck boots, wranglers, and belt buckle.  He was so excited to introduce me to his brood. The whole family was outside caring for the chickens and taking care of the days chores. Two years ago when Aaron and Angie were looking for a home in College Station, it…

  • A Step Back in Time

It wasn’t long after turning onto Dry Creek Road and into the Brazos de Dios that I felt like I had stepped back into time.  Homestead Heritage is a agrarian community outside Waco, Tx that focuses on sustainable agriculture, supportive community living, and maintaining their Christian values. Over Thanksgiving weekend, the community hosted a fair, welcoming visitors to learn about and experience various activities around the farm.  From bees to sheep shearing, there was something to interest everyone. The first thing you will notice about the Brazos de Dios is the size.  Homestead Heritage is approximately 500 acres and sits on the Balcones Fault. The community is made up of…

  • Sunflower Days

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to visit Basecamp Farms, located ten miles south of College Station.  I convinced some friends to tag along though the weather was a little damp and chilly. Texans were freezing but this midwesterner loved the brisk air.  Basecamp Farms was sharing their sunflower crop during Sunflower Days – agritourism at its finest. Upon arrival, we were greeted by friendly faces and handshakes.  Basecamp Farms was excited to share the fruit of their labor. Jordan equipped us with a bucket & clippers; then, pointed us in the direction of the flower plots.  After passing patches of zinnias, we met Georgia who gave us…

  • Happy Thanksgiving!

This is my second Thanksgiving in College Station spent with close friends- family really.  As I reflect on the day, I see it is very much like what dinner with my family in the midwest would be if I was there tonight instead.  Unlike home in the midwest, I lacked my mom’s assorted pies and hugs & kisses from all my kids (they know who they are – nieces, nephews, cousins – basically if I changed their diapers, made them a meal, or gave a consequence more than once, they are counted as mine).  Tears aside, it was much the same, joy filled. There was enough food for an army.…

  • Beyond the Fence Post

Welcome to Beyond the Fence Post. Here you will find ramblings about some of my favorite things- Jesus, Agriculture, and adventures with friends and family. I was raised in rural farming America – Wrights Corner, Loudon Township, Beecher City IL. As the locals say, “It’s God’s country – because only He can find it.” The family farm was home to a host of livestock (shorthorn cattle, Southdown sheep, rabbits, goats, chickens, horses of all kinds) over the years but the pride of the farm was Belgian draft horses. I shoveled manure, sweated in the hay field, hauled water in dry summers, and busted ice covered water tanks alongside my grandparents, parents,…
