Sunflower Days
A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to visit Basecamp Farms, located ten miles south of College Station. I convinced some friends to tag along though the weather was a little damp and chilly. Texans were freezing but this midwesterner loved the brisk air. Basecamp Farms was sharing their sunflower crop during Sunflower Days – agritourism at its finest. Upon arrival, we were greeted by friendly faces and handshakes. Basecamp Farms was excited to share the fruit of their labor. Happy Thanksgiving!
This is my second Thanksgiving in College Station spent with close friends- family really. As I reflect on the day, I see it is very much like what dinner with my family in the midwest would be if I was there tonight instead. Unlike home in the midwest, I lacked my mom’s assorted pies and hugs & kisses from all my kids (they know who they are – nieces, nephews, cousins – basically if I changed their diapers, made them a meal, or gave a consequence more than once, they are counted as mine). Welcome to Beyond the Fence Post. Here you will find ramblings about some of my favorite things- Jesus, Agriculture, and adventures with friends and family. I was raised in rural farming America – Wrights Corner, Loudon Township, Beecher City IL. As the locals say, “It’s God’s country – because only He can find it.” The family farm was home to a host of livestock (shorthorn cattle, Southdown sheep, rabbits, goats, chickens, horses of all kinds) over the years but the pride of the farm was Belgian draft horses.
